FeelGooder Asks: What Have You Learned this Week?

Welcome to our first FeelGooder discussion. At the end of every week, we’ll post a question here specifically for discussion with you.

Today, we’re asking this question:

What’s one thing you’ve learned this week?

To get the ball rolling, let me volunteer something I’ve learned this week. I’ve learned that I love doing things that have a lasting, tangible result. I know what you’re thinking: “Oh, like volunteering for charity or working for a cause.”

No. I’m talking about hobbies. I’m talking about learning to use a chainsaw. Let me explain.

Yes! I cut this up!

As a writer—and a digital writer at that—practically everything I output is intangible and transient. Each thing I produce spends a few brief days on the homepage of a site before it’s gone. Even personal writing projects are digital, not “real”—they’re stored electronically. My work is intangible.

But over the last year I’ve been learning (by necessity) to use a chainsaw. Some bad weather this week saw me chopping up a tree that had fallen across my road with a swiftness and precision I’d never hoped—let alone expected—to achieve. In the beginning, a tree blocked the road. About an hour later, I had a nice wall of firewood stacked in the shed.

The satisfaction this brought me was surprising. Here was something I had done. Every time I look out the window and see that wood, I feel a surge of accomplishment: I can see what I did. It’s a small thing—a simple thing—but it makes me feel good.

Having learned how satisfying I find doing things that have a lasting, tangible outcome, I’m now considering pursuing other interests that produce concrete physical results. I didn’t realise how much that mattered to me until now.

That’s it for me. What have you learned this week?

  1. I have learned this past week is that I like losing weight.
I have been overweight for the past several years and this past July I had weight loss surgery.
I have lost almost 70 lbs since then. I am finding that I like the fact that I am losing this excess weight and changing my life for the better.

  2. I learned that the people you give the most to are usually the ones that value it the least. Actually, I knew this before. I just had a painful reminder of it this week.

    @Dawn

    Congratulations on your accomplishments!

    • I don’t know the situation, but I have found in my 61 years that there are people who should not be in your life. They take and take and give nothing in return. When I stopped hanging out with them, my mental health improved immensely. In many situations you have to give with no expectation of getting thanks. Children, for instance, don’t realize what you have done for them, but if you feel that you are consistently not appreciated by someone, then get the heck away from them. That person is probably draining you in other ways you don’t even realize. Good luck.

  3. This week I learned to pay more attention to my inner guide, especially when she speaks very quietly…

    Blissgings!

    Teri Williams

  4. I learned that it’s incredibly freeing to admit I want something that I was once told was beneath me. (And then I applied to a technical school that teaches something I really want to do.)

  5. I learned this week that there is nothing like knowing you are going to become a father!

I heard the heartbeat of my 8 week old “baby” on an ultra sound, and I can’t put into words the kind of impact that had on me as a person.

  6. Jack that’s awesome. I too now hold a job that my parents thought was “beneath me” but I’m very happy with it.

Joshua, that’s so awesome to hear the heartbeat of your soon-to-be-in-your-arms child. Congrats. That day did a number on me too with my own son … I remember it well.

I am learning and re-learning patience and negotiation this week. Trying to stay upbeat and not get frustrated. Always a tough one for me. I’m a “get it done” kinda gal and don’t like it when others drag their feet.

  7. Well done Georgina, chainsaws are pretty scary, I’m impressed!

This week I learned that I’m crap with social media. Oh well, better keep learning!

@Dawn – awesome job, keep up the great work and attitude!

  8. Nothin’ can top Joshua’s post … congrats, man! You’re in store for allot more learnin’ in the next 7 months!

As a father who has experienced the above three times, I “just” learned how great it is to be reminded of something you should never forget!!

  9. This week I learned once again, that when I do what is in the best interest of my greater Self, it is ultimately what is best for all concerned.

  10. I’ve faced the potential for serious illness, took time out to take care of someone else instead of putting myself first, and vowed that I will take care of myself next time. It’s like the oxygen masks in an airplane disaster; put your own on first. It’s a hard lesson to learn.

  11. This week I learned what it was like to feel completely helpless. On Tuesday, my 28 year old brother was rushed to the emergency room after his wife found him unresponsive (earlier he complained of headache and vomited). Within a couple of hours, he was on a ventilator. The ventilator was not able to oxygenate his body well enough, and he was placed on a lung bypass machine (ECMO). He continues to remain on life-support, although he seems to have turned a corner. Bacterial meningitis was suspected, but has since been disproven.

Today’s Thursday. He’s alive. He’s still unconscious, but his eyes flickered and he squeezed his wife’s hand.

    But he’s alive.

    • Best wishes for your brother, Tara! Good thoughts and hopes sent your way.

    • william Arraes says:

May God give strength to all of you to overcome this stage and wish your brother to recover, and a big hug from Brazil here will be praying for you

  12. This week, I learned that no matter how hard Life throws its rocks at you, you can still get up and become stronger so long as they don’t kill you. ^_^

  13. This week, I remembered the feeling of doing one thing at a time. Then crossing that one thing off my list. And then, moving on to the next. In contrast to frantic juggling and multi-tasking, it was extremely satisfying and productive.

  14. This week I learned that I need to pay more attention to the advice my husband gives me. He was right about not walking in those boots in NYC!

  15. This week I learned that I need to not stop writing, because once I do, it’s nearly impossible to start up again! I’ll get caught up with my to-do list…somehow.

Georgina, you might try one of the yarn crafts like knitting or crocheting. It’s very meditative and it feels great to look at a project after it’s finished. (Bonus: warm hats and scarves for winter! 😀 )

  16. This week I learned that different friends are in my life for different reasons and that it’s ok to not label relationships. Sometimes they just “are”. Friendships & relationships change over time. There doesn’t have to be a reason. I’ve learned the power of positive thinking & that making things happen is up to me & me only. I’ve learned that I can happy again.

  17. william Arraes says:

Joshua! Meu nome é william Sou Brasileiro, e quero te dar os parabéns por voce esta mostrando a essas pessoas que podem mudar sua historia de vida. Um grande abraço
    seu amigo Brasileiro

  18. william Arraes says:

Um grande abraço a todos e obrigado.

A big hug to everyone and thank you

  19. I’ve learned this week that there’s no harm in truly enjoying the run-up to Christmas….whatever age you are. Just bought my first Advent calendar in many a long year and really look forward to opening the little door every day 🙂

  20. There are several things that I learned this week,

One of them is that this week I learned that with the software provide with my MP3 Player I can convert my (Healthy Lifestyle) ‘Motivational/Inspirational-Video’ – for Early Morning Jogging – to a format that I can actually Play on my MP3 Player. (it’s actually a ‘Photo Slide Show’ made from a bunch of Vacation Snapshots from (Gran Canaria) Beach and the Upcomming Sun, with somewhat cinematic-like Visual- and Sound Effects in it.)

In a way it’s also a somewhat ‘Physical Result’ since, now when I tell somebody

‘I made a Video that you
    can see on your Computer’

When there’s no computer in near sight, I now can give them an Instant ‘Red-Carpet like Experience….,’ Anyway, now I can actually show it on my handy Little MP3Player. (I even wrote several posts about this latest little Gadget on several of my Blogs 🙂

    All the Best,
    To your Happy Inspiration,
    HP

  21. I’ve learned that I can listen to my inner critic and still keep going. My therapist just sent me a poem called The Journey by Mary Oliver. Here’s a snippet

    One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
    though the voices around you
    kept shouting
    their bad advice–
    though the whole house
    began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
    at your ankles.
    “Mend my life!”
    each voice cried.
    But you didn’t stop.

  22. This week I learned that I CAN ride the 5.6 mile round trip to the grocery store on my bicycle. I have visions of being someone who replaces much of her driving with biking, but wasn’t sure I am fit enough to do it. Rather than wonder, I set out to try this week. I made it. It was awesome.

  23. I learned I could actually eat oatmeal for breakfast five days in a row with dying.

  24. Great post! Funny, I got my under-grad in Political Science – loved it and then thought – huh? I went back to school and took a soils & irrigation class — alas, something so tangible and real. And that began my love for farming and agriculture – go figure!

    Learning this week?
I need to ask for help before I really need it…
I have a lot of control, in an otherwise chaotic workspace. I created 20 hrs (in intervals) of focused, uninterrupted time.
I am not a slave to my email.

    Thanks again for sharing ~

  25. Last Friday, I was laidoff from my job after 8 years, and 21 years without ever being unemployeed. I leearned, what I already knew, I am a workaholic and when I dont work continiously I get bored easily.

I managed to clean up the house, spent quality time with my wife and started to look for a parttime job to cover until I am called back to work.

I learned that life isnt so bad, not to worry about changes in life becuase if you do, you are unable to adapt to the situation and improve it.

To all you workaholic, spend time with your family.

  26. I’ve learned that human company is a necessity rather than a luxury. I’ve stopped socializing because of work. Last time I went out I had a migraine and lost social skills.

I’m forcing myself to be social and take time off. I feel happier. Work can wait 🙂

  27. Calvin Jarrod says:

  28. Technically speaking, I learned about renal failure, physiological pH imbalances, anion gaps.

I also learned that just because someone is your ‘instructor’ doesn’t mean that they know what their talking about. So then I’ve continued to learn to keep my mouth shut, because they usually don’t like to be told their wrong.

  29. We are already planning. My associates are starting an internet radio station, then we are going to be doing some video. This means I am going to have to learn radio production software and video editing software.

I thought that after Christmas would be some time to rest up for the coming year. It has turned out farest from the truth.

  30. I learned that I had more fun giving presents than receiving them this year at ‘Sinterklaas’ (Dutch kind of Santa). I was surprised at first, as I normally love getting presents, but feeling really great about it now. Giving feels good!

  31. I have learned that people love to laugh, women love a man who can make them laugh, laughter males an awkward situation better and sharing a laugh brings people together and takes an argument rapidly to a resolution:-D

  32. I learned that we’re a long way off from recognizing stereotyping, insensitivity and intolerance — especially when people try to mask it with “humor” and “pranks.” Sigh. I hope this coming week will bring a sweeter lesson.

  33. I learned that putting more effort into my walking
    is very satisfying.
